What Film To Watch Tonight

So just in case you have haven't heard of it, Twitter is a recent addition to the Social Network spectrum which involves posting (or tweeting) small messages to a group of self proclaimed followers.


Twitter exploded specifically through the Arab uprisings and has become a de facto real time News source for many people. The thing that most interests me about this is that people are starting to ask questions of the Twitter-sphere like 'what film to watch #decisions' being a common one.


So what are people's real expectations of asking these questions?


Unlike Yahoo Answers Twitter is not a fan of people abusing the ability to direct posts to people who aren't followers however I am sure that Twitter users are not relying on their own followers for advice. I base this on the fact that during my research I have found that few people answer tweeted questions. Especially if the user has few followers and little notoriety in the Twitter field.


So are uses expecting random people to respond?


I did a test, I focused my research on the Twitter question posted above. I set up a small experiment where I build an automated Twitter personality who would search recent tweets for these questions 'what film to watch' and post back responses. The responses varied from simple film suggestions:


'What about The Godfather?'


To more complex responses such as suggesting multiple films:


'What about The Godfather or Scarface?'


And then on to more useful responses including links to popular sources of trailers and/or reviews to allow the user to click through to the relevant resource and find out more.


So what were the findings?


Well people's expectations fell into a few categories.


The first were tried and tested users of Twitter who exhibited large tweet counts, large following and follower counts who would ignore this message or worse report it as spam. These users were net contributors to Twitter. They would use Twitter as a social platform to advertise themselves and their own thoughts.


The second were more moderate users of Twitter who exhibited small tweet counts and small follower counts but perhaps large following counts. These users would be grateful for the answer since they shows signs of being a net beneficiary from Twitter. They would use Twitter as an information source, be likely to subscribe to News websites and other information sources. These users were more likely to retweet the response or even respond back.


So in conclusion I found that Twitter is full of contributors and beneficiaries. Depending on the context people's attitudes to anonymous responses would differ. The Finest Hours Of Alfred Hitchcock, As Decreed By Us

Unfortunately for our leading meanie, his crimes come back to bite him when a victim's murder is blamed on her boyfriend - who proves his innocence the 'attempted murder' way. Don't try this at home, folks; two wrongs don't make a right.


Then there's Rope, cinematic proof that mates who think they're clever than you are like, really annoying. In this case, two men murder their pal just to prove their intellectual superiority - that's taking it a bit far if you ask us, but hey it's not our plot. Even worse, they then have a party for all their other mates with the dead guy stuffed in a chest.


Luckily, Jimmy Stewart is on hand to figure it all out using a couple of hats and a touch of movie magic. Ah! One of the first proper psychological thrillers and still one of the best.


Imagine something really, really scary. Like the most terrifying thing EVER. Chances are it's not a bunch of birds flapping around your head and threatening to poke your eyes out, but that just means you haven't yet seen The Birds. Hitchcock's avian mafiosos can blow up petrol stations, peck their way into houses and are the sole reason why we'll never set foot in a phone box again. Shudder.


1946's Shadow of a Doubt was Hitch's personal favourite of all his films, and it's really not hard to see why. The central performance by Joseph Cotton is uber-creepy, and this was the first film to set terror in the heart of a quaint suburban neighbourhood. Halloween, Scream and all the rest of them have a lot to thank this one for. And isn't 'Merry Widow Murderer' a cheerful term for serial killer?


Two men meet on a train. They're strangers, but you probably got that from the title of the movie being Strangers on a Train. Anyway, they agree to each kill a member of the opposite guy's family (because apparently they're annoying and that's the first thing you think of on meeting a stranger.) Cue murderousness, double crossing and a trip to the theme park you'll never forget.


Now we come to the masterwork. Vertigo, another Jimmy Stewart flick, is one of our favourite movies in the history of ever. Stewart is everyman no more - here he's cold, obsessed and kinda neurotic. We like it.


Plot-wise it's not that new: private detectives, body doubles, hoaxes and a man who wants his wife dead are all par for the course. But it's also one of Hitch's most personal movies - apparently the idea of remaking a woman in the image of one lost is related to Hitchcock's obsession with casting blondes who looked like Grace Kelly, who retired from acting in 1956 to become a princess. Isn't that sweet!

What Makes a Good Sci-Fi Movie?

Each year, a handful of movies are released bearing the sci-fi label in the hope that they will find their place among the best sci-fi films of all time. The problem that many of these films share, however, is their deep misunderstanding of what sci-fi really is and how it works to create a great movie. Although most movies that reach the distinction of being the best are older, classic films, several modern movies have made the leap as well. A closer look at these films can help to illustrate the criteria for a good sci-fi movie.


Easily Explained Technology


Despite the elaborate machines, ships or robots used in sci-fi films, an important element for a good sci-fi movie is how easily the technology can be explained. "Avatar" (2009), for example, took a ship full of people to a new planet and placed those people into alien bodies. Sounds complex, doesn't it? The greatness and popularity of the film "Avatar" lies in the ease with which the technology can be explained. By the time the ship lands on Pandora and the main character (Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington) is thrust into the alien land in the body of an alien, the audience has fully understood how all of this technology works. In fact, the explanation comes so easily that it is fitted seamlessly into Jake's training. The audience never has to face an information overload. Therefore, a good sci-fi movie must let the audience in on how the technology used works, no matter how complex it may be.


Characters to Care About


Technology, however, is not the sole focus of a movie. A good sci-fi flick still has to worry about character development and likeability. Having characters that the audience can care about is another way that filmmakers can help dole out the explanation of the technology. However, the characters and their part in the plot should always stand on their own merits.


A good example of a sci-fi movie with very likeable characters is "Independence Day" (1996). The film is full of stars, including Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman. From the drunken pilot who dries out long enough to protect the nation, to the President of the United States who straps into a jet to help save his country, there are several characters to love. By the time that the President, played by Pullman, gave his rallying speech to the public, audiences in theaters were thoroughly riveted and rooting for this world fighting against alien invaders.


A Compelling Story


The story is often the reason that audiences are drawn to the movie initially. The film may have cool graphics, slick technology and great actors, but if a sci-fi flick lacks a compelling story, it will surely fail. A good modern example of a film with a compelling story is "District 9" (2009). This film is built on the premise that aliens have landed on earth, but that instead of taking over, they have become a second class of citizen. This was a new concept that audiences flocked to the theaters to see. What was initially billed as an alien colonization story quickly became a tale of discrimination, set in the future of what is supposed to be a discrimination-free world.


Keeping with the Rules of Science


Keeping with scientific rules is also important. In some cases it is acceptable to break the rules of science, but the film must have an explanation for doing so, and must also share that explanation with the audience. Otherwise, breaking an essential rule could break the film before it is widely released. A film that went against this was "Red Planet" (2000), a film that had actors roaming around the planet Mars for much of the film before they realized that their own technology allowed for breathing the Martian air. The scientists in the film also botch basic DNA strand sequences. In addition, they often use the wrong scientific terms to describe basic scientific items. For example, the scientist in the film calls the beetle-like creatures nematodes, which is a term to describe worm-like creatures.


In order to make a film that sci-fi audiences will enjoy watching, filmmakers must keep in mind these basic tenets of the genre. Sci-fi is fraught with opportunities for fantasy, but there are also limitations. Several successful movies have been built within these limits without sacrificing cinematic quality. The Story Behind Bollywood

With a world population of 182 million speakers of Hindi and a thriving cultural industry, we investigate the story behind Bollywood in translation - the focal point of traditional India cinema enjoyed the world over. However, there are lots of misconceptions about this worldwide phenomenon. Although it is commonly interpreted as a wide spanning term for Indian cinema, it is actually a smaller part of it. Bollywood is only part of the Indian film industry, which produces films in regional language. Known formally as Hindi cinema, it also has an increasingly common feature of incorporating Indian English in songs and dialogue (Hinglish in translation).


So where did the word come from? It's a portmanteau of Bombay (former name of Mumbai) and the multimillion-dollar film industry of Hollywood. However, the similarity ends here as it's not an actual physical place, although it does reside in pride of place in the Oxford English Dictionary. The name has also been contested over its original coinage - from the scholar Amit Kannar to journalist Bevinda Collaco.


The story behind Indian cinema began with the screening of six silent films at the Watson Hotel in Bombay from the Lumiere Brothers. Having watched a screening in 1910, Dadasaheb Phalke decided to make his own screening, with the silent film Raja Harishchanda in 1913.


To reflect the times socially, culturally and historically, Indian cinema and Bollywood cinema underwent many trends in subject matter. During the 30s and 40s alongside social upheavals and the partitioning of India, more lighthearted subjects came from a wave of directors who used this political backdrop and freedom movement to flavour their scripts, dissecting many various issues and bringing them to life.


Following the 1940s and 50s, the independence of India heralded the Golden Age of Hindi cinema. These covered a wide range of issues, including social themes dealing with urban life in the famous films of critical acclaim such as the Raj Kapoor films Awaara and Shree 420. Black and white films were still prevalent until the 1960s, although the 1950s heralded in the new age of colour films. The plots now gravitated to romance and dramatic themes with famous actors such as Raj Kapoor and Meena Kumari and then eventually action.

Bond Less then Suave

What is wrong with these people?


For the last three outings (Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and now, Skyfall), the people behind the franchise chose to present Bond, Commander James Bond in a different form- a hunky assassin, nothing more.


James Bond, of course, is the fictional spy created by Ian Fleming, made infinitely more entertaining with slapdash additions from a multitude of writers who co-opted the character through the screenplays of now, 23 outings.


The last three movies portrayed Bond as more of a killing machine, licensed to kill, with a penchant for speedo rather than a highly sophisticated spy posing as an executive for Universal Exports who goes about unearthing schemes of world domination hatched by crazed master criminals that takes him globe trotting to exotic locations,.


So in Casino Royale (2006), Bond engages terrorist-bomb maker, Mollaka in a cardiac-arrest inducing, crane-hanging, parkour style, impossibly long chase that ended in the obligatory explosion scene. Reviews generally gave the film a positive rating, even citing the chase, the best bond sequence. Ah, that maybe true for some. For me, the chase in 'Tomorrow Never Dies' (1997) featuring Bond handcuffed to a female Chinese agent while riding a motorcycle, negotiating the ledges and canopies of a residential area of a Vietnamese town still stands as the best.


For that particular sequence of Casino Royale, my alternate sequence shows Commander Bond, wearing a bush jacket from Saville row, Walther ppk in hand, waiting on the other side of the crane for Mollaka. Smiling at the dumb founded, totally exhausted, sweat drenched terrorist, Bond speaks with something like " My dear chap, I would have brought you Gatorade but I've a bit of a credit card glitch." spouted in that Bond-patented nasal, low-pitched,clipped Brit accent.


Why would Bond be traipsing atop buildings and cranes? He is an intelligence officer of her majesty not part of the British Olympic team.


I heard somebody ask " wearing a bush jacket from Saville row? why he would have been spotted a mile away". My dear chap, Bond would not be caught dead in anything less chic. In "Tomorrow Never Dies" Bond sneers at the clothes worn by Wade consisting of an odd Hawaiin shirt and slacks when he meets the American spy on board a carrier. Now that would tell you Bond is also a fashion police.


Because James Bond is the most élite spy, a spy's spy, he can't be spotted even if he comes off the oddest thing in a given environment. Remember "You Only Live Twice" (1967)?


Custom made Saville row suits and funny quips define the Bond flair. Who is Bond without suave? If Bond were not suave; if Bond were vulnerable, sartorially inadequate and aging., he might as well be Jason Bourne, Ethan Hunt and Aaron Cross, maybe even pinoy super spy, Tony Falcon.


The thing I like about Bond is the idea of a guy who knows what he's doing and showing class while at it. In Dr. No, Bond immediately finds out that the driver supposed to fetch him from the airport was really an enemy spy sent to kill him by merely making a telephone call. In 'Die Another Day' (2002) Bond knows all too well about a Chinese spy ring in a Hong kong Hotel but only exposes his knowledge at exact time, after putting on custom tailored clothes. In all the Bond films I have seen, the commander always possessed some background knowledge of elements of a case.


Diametrically opposed to that particular Bond concept, in Casino Royale, Bond losses all his money in a poker table to a guy called le Chiffre because he assumed the opponent was bluffing. Any fool poker player knows that in a tourney, one does not risk tilting on the assumption of a bluff. It is not just done.All these years Bond possessed incredible luck at the tables.In the Fleming novel, Bond wins. Why they would chose an alternate version is again beyond me.


There is nothing wrong with Daniel Craig. He is as good as his predecessors, except maybe the bad hair. In Skyfall, Craig wears a scruff which looks totally unsuave. Even on vacation Bond is never scruffy. The only other time Bond looked scruffy was In Die Another Day, where he was captured and kept prisoner for a long time and so grows a beard and long hair (though being beaten thoroughly by the Koreans, he should have lost weight a bit).


Writers of the last three Bond films removed the suave side of Bond for no valid reason I can think of. They just made Bond ordinary.


Probably the writer lost track of Bond's cover, a well-traveled executive of Universal Exports (which I think might need updating. It's not really known what it exports, cigars maybe as in 'Die Another Day'?). As such, Bond has to look the part, custom clothes (should fit well, they would be custom tailored after all), cigarettes (555 was the Bond brand until 'Live and Let Die' in 1973), Smirnoff, most expensive watch and Aston Martin.


Bond would also have to be not just literate in computers, he would have to be a techie, as most executives today. As such, Bond would be well verse in broad range of subjects.


And as techieness goes, Commander Boothroyd (or Q) is the mother of all techies (even before the word came about) and in that, Bond can never be without a new gadget.


Skyfall (2012) meantime shows signs of Bond aging, sensitive (he took personally M's order for moneypenny to take the shot that fell him in a struggle on top a moving train) and unable to hit targets. I don't think 007 is authorized by her majesty to age, be sensitive, even sweat or miss targets, let alone non-moving ones during practice. those traits belong to a lower paygrade, I suppose, definitely not for double Os.The secret service recruited Bond from the Navy from which he earned the rank Commander. At that rank, he should be in his thirties or there about. The franchise having thrown away the time line of Ian Fleming (that he was recruited after the 2nd world was) abandon the age question entirely (as an example, in Casino Royale Bond just earned his double 0), it then stands to reason that he is still in his thirties, strong, sharp and cocky.


And what about the famous Bond girls? They lost their catchy names like Pussy Galore, Octopussy, Dr. GoodHead, Major Onotop and Honey Rider? But I like the idea on Moneypenny being a trained operative, although she should have disrobed for a sneak peek on what Bond is missing. The occasional appearance of Moneypenny should beg the question, will they?


And then there are the more ordinary villains that Bourne could kick with one hand tied.


My list of first-rate villains include Jaws and Oddjob, almost industrutable. I like 006 as a villain as well, more gripping when it is two equal forces and suaveness. Silva in Skyfall is not comparable to 006 even when it is indicated that he is a top spy as well. How can a trained operative miss M at the hall?


All in all, the Bond franchise moves rather splendidly, if it were judged by the box office return. But for the old Bond followers like me,come on then, give us back old James. Providing useful articles, reviews and writings on movies and films online.

Movie Review, Atlas Shrugged: Part II

Ever since watching Atlas Shrugged: Part I, I couldn't wait to watch Atlas Shrugged: part II. In case you have no idea what these movies are about, they are based on Ayn Rand's epic ground-breaking novel, Atlas Shrugged. Ayn Rand published her novel in 1957. Since its publication, this novel has been the catalyst for inspiration and controversy ever since. I must confess that I had never heard of this novel before the movie came out. Now that I've watched both movies, I definitely want to read Rand's work.


Rand's theme in the novel is each person's individual achievement in the world and how success should be perceived in relation to the good of mankind. The author explores what would happen when the success and achievements of individuals is stifled and they are devalued-even made to appear as heartless, greedy individuals... all because they believed in the capitalism and the American dream-to work hard and succeed.


The characters are complex and Rand's theme may seem intellectual and possibly "boring;" however, as the novel translates to the movie, the characters come to life in a compelling way. The plot combines inspirational ideas, drama, romance and the mysterious character of John Galt. I loved the character of Dagny Taggart. She is a woman who knows what she wants. Not only is she beautiful, but she is also intelligent and gutsy. She stands up for her principles in a world devoid of men and women of true character.


Dagny embraces the values of capitalism and knows that this system is what can and will save the world that is on the brink of economic disaster. The Government and its micromanagement is not the catalyst for rebirth of a society built upon individual rights and the opportunity to follow your dreams for success. Your success can be shared with the world, but on your own terms and not because the Government wants to steal it from you. That is tyranny, not a free society.


The male lead character is Henry Reardon. His philosophy was to succeed in business and make money. He was not afraid to admit that he was in business to earn a living. Of course he wasn't a selfish man who didn't care about humanity. However, he realized that capitalism was the answer and it was his right to work hard and succeed in life. He would not bow down to the politicians and Government bureaucracy who wanted "to steal" from his business and devalue his rights as a businessman. The villains in the movie aren't your usual "evil" bad guys but rather wolves in sheep's' clothing.

Adaptation Decay

When a franchise reaches a certain level of popularity, it has become a noticeable trend to adapt written works, comic books and even video games into Hollywood Pictures. This practice has become prevalent in a number of recent motion pictures: Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games, the numerous superhero movies, Transformers and games like Resident Evil and Tekken. While seeing these materials in motion is definitely a big draw of a film adaption, there is often one thing that long time fans of a franchise end up looking at when these movies finally come out: How faithful the movie is to the source material.


For fans, it often does not matter how pretty the effects are or how famous the cast and production crew are, the film is rendered pointless if nothing resembles the original. Books seem to get off the easiest in this department, as at worst content is omitted due to the fact they need to compress a large amount of content into a relatively small time frame by comparison. It is the same with comics, though they are spared because an issue is often a self-contained story and does not reach the length of a novel, though skipping through big events is still a problem present in these...


Other franchises are not as lucky however. Video games seem to lose the most when they are ported from the home consoles to the big screen. Starting with the concept with something as simple as a fighting game it was a wonder how so much was changed in regards to Tekken. The characters were not recognizable beyond their names and most of the fighting styles were not even similar, and this is taking into account the transition from video game design to real life. Resident Evil is another game series that falls short in the film adaption department, whose story has absolutely nothing to do with the games beyond there are zombies in them.


Children's franchises also take a hit here, with Transformers and Avatar the Last Air Bender also receiving a number of negative criticisms in regards to how faithful they were to the original concepts. Admittedly while Micheal Bay's Transformers is its own universe, it does not really make people think of the classics beyond wondering what happened to them and why they are like this in his version. Avatar on the other hand just has a number of problems utilizing the original's content and is once more not recognizable by fans beyond their names.


While it is not true to say all adaptations of different media are bad, they suffer a lot in the transition and makes people question whether it was really worth it in the end. Further there are times when the creator is not even consulted for such and thus the distance between the adaptation and the original becomes even further. Reviews of Famous Martial Arts Movies, The Brothers Five

Out of all Cheng Pei-Pei movies, "The Brothers Five" which was released in 1970 was probably the most queer as the main female lead in the movie was not the center of the story at any time. Still, with the help of an excellent cast which included the beautiful Pei-Pei, director Lo-Wei pulled off an amazing movie.


Like all other wuxia movies during that period, the movie has nothing new on offer as far as the script is concerned. The movie begins with Yueh Hua helping a man who was being roughed up by the driver of a coach while going to the Flying Dragon Villa, a mansion that is usually not spoken of by the villagers.


Yueh Hua beats the driver who runs away leaving behind a driver-less carriage. Yueh Hua finds Yan Loi (Cheng Pei-Pei) sitting inside the carriage. Yan was herself going to the Flying Dragon Villa. So Yueh offers to driver her coach and together they head for the Villa.


Gao Wei (Yueh Hua) wards of a few more bad guys on the way and then Yan Loi tells her story. Gao Wei was going to meet Yan's father who is dead and the evil Long Zhen Feng is responsible. We are then introduced another revenge story that unfolds gradually. "The Brothers Five" have the usual wuxia style of plot which is set in a world filled with martial arts exponents.


The action sequences are well thought and executed. We are introduced to the Flying Dragon Villa almost half an hour after the movie starts. The first fight scene at the Villa featuring a blacksmith (Chin Han) and a group of baddies is a feast and the original location adds to the thrill. Devoid of any background music, the scene is filled with wide shots plus loads of mouth-watering action.


The film might seem predictable at times with the brothers arriving one after another, but most of the time the movie is exciting and well planned. All the five brothers are eventually drawn towards the Flying Dragon Villa in a series of well thought and executed events.


The timing for the release of "The Brothers Five" was perfect. It does not have the usual super-male quotient as other Cheh movies, nor does it have the stodgy factor as in the earlier Shaw movies during the 60s. Male chauvinism is, for once, is never the highlight of the movie. The usage of real locations to show the Flying Dragon Villa is a welcome relief and it is in fact exciting to watch the brilliant actions scenes against the backdrop of blue sky as well as greenery.


"The Brothers Five" is definitely lengthy when compared to other movies by Cheh. But you can't really complain when you have a 15 minutes long climax which is filled with heart-stopping sword fights and feisty hammer fights. Reviews of Famous Martial Arts Movies, The Duel

"The Duel" is more of a canvas soaked in blood rather than a movie and it is filled with moments of rage and bloody encounters, filling each scene in the movie with decisive death blows and displays of ultimate fury. Directed by the legendary Chang Cheh under the Shaw Brothers banner, the dialogues and the conversations between the characters in the movie seem to be an excuse to move from one bloody encounter to another. Apart from the mindless butt-kicking, "The Duel" also touches the sensitive topic of corrupted politicians and politics, thus forcing the protagonist to over-ride the law at all points to take down a bunch of power- hungry politicians trying to destroy peace and harmony.


The opening scene shows Tan Jen-chieh (Ti Lung) getting a huge butterfly tattoo drawn onto his chest, as a show of his affection for Hue-dieh (Ping Wang). But the happiness doesn't last forever, as Tan gets involved in a war between his gangster grandfather and a fierce rival. Chang Cheh tries to create a western impact with such a violent crescendo as a gang of assassins stroll down the streets butchering innocents. When knives and swords start being thrown meaninglessly, "The Duel"transforms itself into a cinematic butchering playground, bursting arteries and cutting through bellies as if there is no tomorrow. The screen is filled with carnage, bashed up faces, torn shirts and blood.This blood bath results in the exile of Tan and his grandfather getting murdered.


"The Duel" is violent although the climax reveals the director's honest attempt to take on the political world. Tan ultimately takes down each and every bad guy in a bloodbath. However, the evil Senator manages to escape the punishment. Chang shows that no matter what the degree of violence is, it will not be able to vanquish the real masterminds manipulating the government. This was a well realized fact and was beautifully presented in the climax of the movie. Instead of letting the bruised and battered protagonists stand upright at the end of the movie; Chang shows them trying to stand up and surprisingly freezes the frame. This was done probably to show the shadow of mortality looming on all mankind, no matter who they are. The battle against mortality can never be won, no matter how good you are at Kung Fu.


The glamour that is usually associated with Shaw Brothers is very evident throughout the movie, more during the numerous bloody scenes. All other colors have been used brilliantly throughout and the audience is left spell bound at one point. Quality sound, which is a vital factor for the success of a Kung Fu film, is amazing throughout the movie. The screams, slices and the gushing blood leave a long lasting impression on the minds of the audience.

Famous Hero Spiderman's Journey to the Big Screen

One of the top grossers in the big screen today is superhero movies and who could forget Marvel's famous hero Spiderman? The boy who got bit by a radioactive spider has charmed the public and was able to sell off its merchandise by storm. Spiderman is a story about a boy named Peter Parker who was bit by a radioactive spider thus giving him his superhuman abilities. Peter Parker was the typical outcast in high school. He was way too smart for his level, he was an introvert and was always bullied in school. Moreover, his foster parents, Aunt May and Uncle Ben weren't financially well-off therefore giving Peter more pressures in life.


When Peter found out he had powers in the likes of a spider, he took advantage of it to earn more money. It made him join fight clubs in disguise by wearing a mask so that he could beat his opponent and win the prize money. However, when his uncle was killed by a robber he has set free earlier, he changed his ways and took his responsibility of fighting crime and enemies that arise in New York.


Spiderman was franchised in the 80s so that it could become a film production. It was moved to various production companies until it finally reached and stayed with the Sony Pictures Entertainment.


Sony thought it would be a smart move to hire a comic book fan to direct the movie so they called Sam Raimi. In the end, he was the director of all the three Spiderman films namely Spiderman, Spiderman 2 and Spiderman 3. The lead role was played by Tobey Maguire and his love interest Mary Jane Watson was Kirsten Dunst. Spiderman's antagonists in the sequel were Green Goblin as Willem Dafoe, Doctor Octopus as Alfred Molina, the New Goblin as James Franco who happen to be Harry, Peter Parker's best friend, the Sandman and Venom.


Raimi's trilogy had a budget of $597 million and was able to gross nearly $2.5 billion dollars worldwide. The first two films were given exceptional reviews however the third one received mixed opinions. Although there were rumors that there would still be a fourth installation, it was discontinued but made way for an upcoming movie, mid-year of 2012.


The Amazing Spiderman is a reboot from Sam Raimi's films and is directed by Marc Webb. The plot takes Peter back to his teenage years and in high school making the production replace Tobey Maquire with Andrew Garfield. Housewife Wars, My New Reality TV Show Idea

Attention cable and network executives; I have a great idea for a new game show or Reality TV series. It 's called "Housewife Wars" and is based on true-life situations in households across the United States. Actually, it is based on my life and the daily challenges that I have faced that would put "Survivor" cast mates to shame. I actually applied to be a "Survivor" contestant a few years ago but broke my leg in three feet of snow trying to build a snow castle for the kids.


The premise of the show is to scour the United States for confident, professional housewives (or perhaps househusbands) that sign up to be part of the challenge. At the drop of a hat a Hollywood film crew will show up at your door with a challenge. You must complete the challenge in a certain amount of time in order to make it to the finals. All finalists will compete "on air" and the audience can vote for the winners! I think it would be hilarious and inspirational to see how stay at home moms and dads get creative and make it through life's challenges.


Here are some of the challenges that real life stay at homers will have to successfully complete in order to win the contests:


1. Sock Challenge - You have a full load of clean, dry socks. The winner will have to successfully match as many pairs of socks as humanly possible in 5 minutes. I have tried this challenge and it is impossible. I have piles of mysterious socks that I have never seen in my life. How can these socks sneak into the laundry and only show up in the dryer? They are pink, green, baby sizes (no babies in my house) soccer socks (my kids don't play soccer) and often have mysterious holes in them. It is maddening that the expensive knee high Nordstrom socks that my husband buys constantly disappear. He keeps waiting for them to magically reappear one day, and sometimes they do! My son can never find two socks that match in his drawer so he just goes to the laundry room in the morning to grab two white ones while he heads out the door.


2. Supermarket Sweep - this was a Reality show in the 90's that I actually won. My friend Patty and I were on two episodes and I have VHS tapes of us winning the battle of the shopping cart grocery store challenge. It was hilarious but not as funny as the real life daily challenge of racing into the grocery store with a short list of emergency items; eggs, full fat half and half, non fat vanilla Greek yogurt, Lucky Charms, Chipotle Tabasco, 2 bottles of Kendall Jackson Chardonnay (Cougar Crack... ), and RIPE avocados (good luck with that one.) You have to find all of these items and pay for them within 15 minutes or you will be late for the after school day care pick up and fined $10 per minute. Your child will also be humiliated by being the last kid left on campus. As an extra challenge at the grocery you have to politely avoid the "stop and chats" by friendly neighbors and annoying homeless organizations asking for handouts.


3. Short Order Cook - This is a good one and happens daily at my house. Your son shows up with 4 pals around mealtimes. Why do they always seem to hang out in the kitchen like stray cats until you feed them? In this challenge you have to make 5 delicious meals out of leftovers from whatever is in your refrigerator or freezer. Luckily most of my son's friends are not that picky and are happy with quesadillas, grilled cheese, leftover rice or mac n cheese. But remember, it has to be tasty, fast and ENOUGH to satisfy the boys and make them go away. The Bonus round is to be able to prove that your condiments are not expired and will poison the boys.


4. The Meeting Challenge - why do women love to schedule 9 am meetings that last for hours? I don't get it. I prefer lunch meetings. I mean we all have to eat, or better yet, happy hour meetings with cocktails and appetizers. Heck, I'll even offer to be on the live auction committee if I can have a glass of chardonnay. Can't we multitask and figure out how to raise money while munching on chicken salad? I would be happy to bring pot luck if we could just not waste my precious morning hours sitting around with an agenda from hell. In this challenge you have exactly one hour to get the kids up, make them a healthy school lunch, send them out the door, run a mile on the treadmill, shower, put on a decent outfit, MAKEUP (no cheating), dry your hair, and get to the meeting on time. I love to volunteer for good causes but hate meetings.


I am sure we can all come up with enough of these Housewife War Challenges to keep the series alive and in the top 10 for years. Once the producers in Hollywood realize the true life heroes in this country are hidden in the homes across America performing amazing feats of courage, honor, and faith on a daily basis. It takes a real woman (or man as the case may be) to make it through the day without saying "that's it, I'm just going to go back to bed, watch TV all day, and eat bon bons." Best Scary Flicks for Family Fun

The latter part of 2012 featured the release of a trio of films that delivered family friendly frights. "ParaNorman" followed a young boy as he learned to adapt to his ability to communicate with the dead. "Hotel Transylvania" features hotel owner Dracula, who invites all of the famous monsters to his daughter's birthday party, only to find a human in the mix. In "Frankenweenie," a young scientist uses the power of electricity to bring his dead dog back to life. Though these movies are all animated, the list of scary movies suitable for children includes both live-action and animated classics.


Tim Burton directed "Frankenweenie" as well as "Beetlejuice," a 1988 film that sounds rather dark on paper but is comedy, right down to its unforgettable dinner dance scene. Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin star as the Maitlands, a married couple who are killed in a car accident and return to their former home as ghosts. When a new family moves in, led by insufferable parents (Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Jones), the Maitlands decide to spook them out of the house. The couple's gothic daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder), who can see ghosts, complicates matters. Michael Keaton's titular character is a smarmy "bio-exorcist" the Maitlands hire to help get rid of the family. Keaton is only onscreen for about 20 minutes, but those are the most iconic scenes of the film.


Tim Burton was behind another hair-raising family friendly film, though he served as the co-writer and co-producer on this title. "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is a stop-motion animated film featuring Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, as he pursues his dream of being Santa Claus for a change in holiday pace. The residents of Halloween Town are darkly rendered but have a wide range of personalities that make it easy for children to find a favorite. Sally, Jack's love interest, assembled like Frankenstein's monster out of rag doll parts, has a sweet and protective disposition. The only character that might spook small children is Oogie Boogie, a singing and dancing bogeyman who threatens Santa. This film achieved cult status, and is particularly popular around the Halloween season.


"Hocus Pocus" is another popular film with a Halloween theme. The 1993 live-action movie starts in the past, during the times of the Salem Witch Trials, and introduces the Sanderson Sisters. The trio of sisters (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy) is caught sucking the life out of children to gain eternal youth and beauty. While attacking one girl, the witches turn her brother, Binx, into a cat. The witches are killed by a mob, but issue a curse that if a virgin lights a candle during a full moon, the sisters will return. That happens in the 1990s when Max (Omri Katz) lights the candle to impress a girl and lures the witches onto the trail of him and his kid sister Dani (Thora Birch). The children, aided by the talking cat Binx, attempt to outwit the witches.


"The Witches," Jim Henson's classic film based on a Roald Dahl story, is much more sinister than "Hocus Pocus." A young boy (Jasen Fisher) stumbles upon the fact that a group of women has formed a witch society and is planning to turn all the world's children into mice. It is up to the boy and his plucky grandmother (Mai Zetterling) to take down the head witch, portrayed by a delightfully evil Angelica Huston. There are some genuine scares in this film as the witches' true appearances are less than pretty.


"Gremlins" has a pair of teenagers spending the night evading creatures somewhat more scaly than the characters in "Witches." After Billy (Zach Galligan) receives a mysterious Mogwai named Gizmo, he's told three rules for the upkeep of his new pet: don't get him wet, don't feed him after midnight, and never expose him to sunlight. After the first two rules are violated, Gizmo sprouts some new Mogwai, who have a much meaner disposition. It's a race across town for Billy to destroy the evil Mogwai and keep his friends and family safe.


When selecting a family friendly movie with scary elements, it's important to consider the ages and specific fears of the children involved. While "Arachnophobia" is appropriate for most ages, it wouldn't be wise to show it to a child who is already afraid of spiders. Music Soundtracks Are Essential to the Best Film Experience

Films are considered a mainly visual experience, and many people don't stop to consider just how important music is in movies. Audiences don't just watch; they also take in auditory stimuli. During the time of silent films, music was an essential part of telling the story, and live pianists were employed by theaters to accompany the visual feast. Characters were shaped and events foreshadowed using music to convey thought and emotion.


Chances are that if the music soundtrack were removed from a film, the omission would quickly be noticed. The movie would not be as enjoyable, and it would feel like something was missing. Music adds to the perception of things unseen. It has the power to alter mood and to change it, if needed. An epic score makes the sword fights more exciting, or increases the impact of a death.


Modern films often seem to lack the brilliant scores that were the norm during the Golden Age of Hollywood, when "Gone with the Wind" and "The Adventures of Robin Hood" were hits. The 1970s and 1980s also had some of the most memorable original soundtracks, with classics such as John Williams' work on "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark."


Imagine no "Star Wars Theme," if you can. Darth Vader will always be tied to "The Imperial March." Indiana Jones will always have his "Raiders March." Williams also gave magic to the world of Harry Potter, giving a sense of whimsy when appropriate, or of dire consequence such as that conveyed during the sad aftermath of the Battle of Hogwarts.


Effective music does not always have to be an original score. The best examples are two films directed by Robert Zemeckis: "Back to the Future" and "Forest Gump." Each of these films deals with time travel and historical accounts.


Music from the times adds to the experience for the viewers, taking them along with the characters and their worlds. "American Psycho" uses music in such a manner to convey that the protagonist is mentally unstable and also to set the mood of 1987. The character of Patrick Bateman analyzes pop lyrics much like he does other matters, which reveals him as a psychopath with violent tendencies. His analysis of Phil Collins' "Sussudio" and Huey Lewis and the News' "Hip to be Square," among other songs, is all about who Bateman is.


One film is credited for bringing quality film soundtracks back to the masses. Hans Zimmer arranged the score for Ridley Scott's "Gladiator." It is not considered his best work, with only the haunting yet hopeful song "Elysium" as a standout, but sales of the soundtrack make it one of the most popular. Zimmer also brought the tremendous sounds to " Inception." Without such an ambitious soundtrack, the fantastical dream sequences in the movie would not have had the same impact. The pounding staccato beats that reach a boisterous crescendo of low brass and horns added magnitude to important sequences.


These days, there are few television shows in Hollywood that use live, full orchestras and scored themes. However, to hear an original soundtrack is a treat for the ears and mind. The science fiction drama "Fringe" is one of these, with music composed by Michael Giacchino and Chris Tilton. Each major character has his or her own individual theme, and there is even a couple's theme. Every episode has some original cues or variations on existing themes. Often described as a family drama masquerading as science fiction, the show is full of a range of human emotions. It would not be half of what it is without the perfect musical accompaniment.


In addition, the show makes excellent use of existing songs. One of the most emotional moments in the series places one of the main characters-Walter Bishop (John Noble)-in an old, abandoned taxi cab. His world is upside down, his family in despair, and there seems to be little hope left in a dystopian future. He takes an old mix CD and plays it. Yazoo's "Only You" comes on, and as he listens tearfully, he sees a lone dandelion emerging from the cracks of a sidewalk. As a result of the music, this beautiful scene conveys so much hope and emotion.


The importance of music is constantly referred to in the show. As Walter says, it helps him to shift perspective and to see things differently. The Avengers Movie's Success

The Avengers is a film produced by the Marvel Studios and released in 2012. It is a superhero film based on the superhero team from the Marvel Comics. The film had its world premiere on April 11th 2012, at the El Capitan Theatre in California. The film broke many box office records immediately after its release on that day. The Avengers film made a record $207,438,708 during its first weekend at the theaters. This is a noteworthy record because Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 managed to acquire $169.2 million in its first weekend after the premiere. In its first week, the film broke the Dark Knight's 2008 record of $238.6 million by bringing in $270.019 million in ticket sales.


The Avenger's film received positive reviews by many notable critics. For example, the film got a 93% rating from the Rotten Tomatoes, which is a review aggregator website. It also obtained an average 8.1 points on 10 from the overall 267 reviews. CinemaScore gave the film an A+ grade based on the audience reviews. Another review from Metacritic showed the film received a score of 69 out of 100, due to the aggregation of 43 reviews.


The factors that contribute to the success of the movie are the stars, careful planning, as well as the original content. Big Film Posters of 2012

Films are getting bigger and bigger. Prequels, sequels. Remakes and more. 2012 is a big year for films, and in turn, film posters. The designers and teams behind films have probably, quite a lot on their plate. You'd be forgiven to thinking that they could just chuck then design to an intern.


"You boy! Intern! The one with the beard! Take a screen shot and put some reviews on it. Make it snappy. 8 million prints. In the next hour. "


However, it's worth bearing in mind that this is the studio's main route to press and excitement over their latest creation, so plenty of time and effort goes into making these posters the best they can be.


So the top film posters of 2012 for the bestsellers were as follows:


The Avengers


The Avengers posters showed the full cast of the avengers assembled (see what we did there?) with some shots of individual members, and a clear focus on the date as well as the 'A' for avengers and the studio Marvel. The brand is well established and needed little explanation, and the use of the variety of characters on their own and together added diversity and interest for fans of the individual films (e.g. Thor, Hulk, Iron Man.)


The Hunger Games


The Hunger Games posters were a mix of the full cast in a shadowy side profile, as well as the arena shot with the strap line 'the world will be watching'. For those who hadn't read the hunger games books, this unusual setting certainly gave an air of mystery to the film, with the poster giving actually little away to the genre and plot of the Hunger Games. Titanic 3D's posters featured jack and rose looking wet and a little harrowed (wonder why?) with the strap line 'experience it like never before'. The push here is all on 3D, and Titanic 3D, although not reinventing the wheel, was always going to be a big hitter on the anniversary of the sinking of the ship.


Wrath of the Titans


The Wrath of the Titans posters featured spearing of two headed beasts, a hunky male lead in full view of the shot, as well as the aforementioned beast breathing fire on said hunky male lead. The theme of wrath of the titan's poster was definitely 'Action!!' and gave a real indication of 'what you see is what you'll get.' It worked, grossing $298,004,440 worldwide.


So, we're not even through 2012 and we are already seeing some amazing film posters and movies hitting worldwide. The year of the blockbuster, the movie poster themes continue to push 3D, Imax and Real, and we can expect to see some great images for the upcoming Batman: The Dark Knight Rises posters and the new Spiderman posters. Typically manufactures selling these screen also sell products such as holiday decorations, and don't have the experience creating a stable, quality commercial movie screen.


One way to tell a true commercial screen is to look for a screen that is made of a heavier weight material such as reinforced PVC. Movie Review: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)

From the concept of a former president's double life as a monster slayer to the outrageously unhinged action sequences, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter will test your suspension of disbelief. Films of this nature are often hard to digest in the first place, but a more careful attention to creating a coherent narrative and a greater focus on explanation over theatrics would have better prepared the mind for the outlandish situations presented. Few rules are set for the abilities of our hero, even fewer for the foes, motives are blurry at best, and gravity (of any kind) rarely makes an appearance. There's a reason you've never seen two people fighting atop a stampede of wild horses - it's just not believable no matter how substantial the special effects.


When ruthless businessman Jack Barts (Marton Csokas) murders his mother (with a conspicuous bite that causes a sickness for which there is no febrifuge), Abraham Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) becomes obsessed with revenge. But on the night he finally musters the courage to kill Barts, he discovers his nemesis is actually an immortal vampire. With the aid of the mysterious vampire hunter Henry Sturgess (Dominic Cooper), Lincoln learns how to destroy the undead and becomes a skilled killer. Hiding his demonic exploits from his love, Mary Todd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Lincoln begins a career in law and politics. His successes in both his public and private endeavors brings the unwelcome attention of the deadly vampire leader Adam (Rufus Sewell), causing a war to ignite that will determine the very fate of mankind.


The extent of the ridiculousness in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter cannot easily be compared or understood. It's not dissimilar to director Bekmambetov's other wildly eccentric projects, although it is drastically less polished. He makes interesting choices with adaptations, but is starting to reveal himself to be limited to the creativeness of the source material and the level of over-stylized special effects he can fuse into the blueprint. As his selections become further and further disconnected from believability, the errors and ludicrousness are much more apparent. It's bad enough that history is being grossly (not cleverly) distorted; with the exaggerated fight sequences, physics-defying stunts (an occasional few of which aren't entirely disappointing), unconvincing CG medley, and superhuman abilities of a character defined as ordinary, this hopelessly silly premise repeatedly approaches insulting.


"Vampires are real, Mr. Lincoln," matter-of-factly states Henry. This line occurs early on, with an abruptness and a bluntness that establishes the general degree of hasty introductions for every character and setting. There's never time to absorb the elements of the supernatural, the twist on the historical legend, or the shocking physical strength and ninja-like agility of Lincoln (which never subsides, especially noticeable when he turns 50). Even the unique aspects of the bloodsuckers, including invisibility, acclimation to sunlight, and the invulnerability of vampires to other vampires, present themselves out of thin air and without explanation. Abraham is taken as a pupil instantly, a training montage materializes swiftly, and genuine danger seems remote. If it isn't peculiar enough hearing factual names, famous battle locations, and civil rights milestones mentioned in context with slaying monsters, or the use of recognizable comedy character actors (Alan Tudyk, Jimmi Simpson), or hilariously violent and intentionally gratuitous death scenes, the 20+ year gap in vengeance (the villains just ignore the hero for decades) and acrobatic duel atop charging stallions might do the trick.

What Other Good Film Rental Websites Are There Like LOVEFiLM?

Part of the Amazon Group, LOVEFiLM appears to own the European stream and DVD rental market nowadays. Word on the street is that it has now over two million subscribers, renting over four million DVDs per month! Not to mention it's online streaming option "LOVEFiLM Instant!"


There are many different options to become a member of LOVEFiLM. First of all you can opt to just rent actual DVDs by post (no streaming). Secondly there is a sole online streaming option. Finally you can combine the two with several price options to suit even the most obsessed film fanatic (see resources below for info and free trials on LOVEFiLM and Netflix). So I wondered, what other websites are available that do a similar job to this one? Are there any that actually do a better job? Let's take a look at the alternatives.


Blink Box


I first took a look at the UK based Tesco owned company, Blink Box. I first of all noticed what could be a distinct advantage over LOVEFiLM, you don't need to pay a monthly subscription fee! When using Blink Box, you "pay per title" so you only have to fork out when you actually feel like watching something. This would definitely appeal to a casual film watcher. It also has a wealth of titles available, it seems maybe even more than LOVEFiLM in the online streaming department (boasts over ten thousand available). Some films are even free to watch, and prices to rent seem fairly reasonable. So far so good for my search! Blink box seems to offer a good alternative to people who wouldn't want to fork out every month just for a few movies. Let's move on and have a look at another website then.


Netflix


Netflix is another website that has similarities with LOVEFiLM. However the pricing model is a lot similar offering one flat subscription rate (£5.99 a month, one month free trial). It was founded in the US and has a massive amount of customers over there, boasting around $1.5 billion revenue in 2011. It is also currently smashing it in the European market and boasts to have over 100,000 titles on offer to watch online, from films to television series. In my opinion, for the shear number of titles available, Netflix beat LOVEFiLM hands down in terms of value for money.

Auf Wiedersehen Pet Series 1

In 1983, a TV show was shown on ITV, that could have been a huge hit or a ratings disaster. Thankfully for all involved, Auf Wiedersehen Pet was a huge hit for viewers and critics alike.


The UK in the late 1970's and early 1980's was a place of national strikes and huge unemployment, especially in places such as the North East. Franc Roddam the creator of the show, came up with the idea, when on returning to his home town of Norton, Stockton on Tees, found that many of his friends in the construction trade had gone to work in Germany.


Franc Roddam created the series, and worked with the brilliant writing team of Ian la Frenais and Dick Clement, who had also written for shows such as The Likely Lads and Porridge. Six episodes were written, and then the rest of the series was written around the characters, as we watched them fall in and out of love, get into fights and also find some of them back in the UK unexpectedly.


The series was a huge success, and not only down to the great writing and superb performances of the cast. The series made huge names out of Jimmy Nail, Tim Spall, Tim Healy, Kevin Whately, Pat Roach and Gary Holton.


Viewers were drawn to the reality of what they were seeing on screen, and because of what was happening at that time in the UK, it was almost like watching a documentary for many people. The series struck a chord, and still does almost 30 years on from when it was first shown on British TV.


The series revolved around a group of seven men. Four bricklayers, a carpenter, a plasterer and an electrician. The timing of the show was perfect, and to think that this type of show would be such a hit in this modern world we live in, probably not.


The series was shown on ITV from the 11th of November 1983, through to the 10th of February 1984. Viewing figures for the first series were an average of 10 million, but this would almost double for the second series when that was aired in 1986.


There were many comparisons made to this first series, with many commenting on how it was very much like watching a WW2 film, as the lads all lived in a blue wooden hut on site. This was what made the series real and gritty, and the writers and creator knew how to connect with the British public at a time when there was nothing to look forward to, except rising unemployment figures. Mad Men Commentary: Episode 511, The Other Woman

Joan and Peggy. These two have been the subject of much contrasting over five seasons of Mad Men, and this week's episode, titled The Other Woman, casts their differences in the sharpest relief yet.


That title - The Other Woman - refers to a mistress, which is how Don and his creative team think of Jaguar. As he explains it to Megan, "The Jaguar is beautiful, but unreliable. It comes with a toolkit the size of a typewriter. You basically have to have another car to go places. What we're saying is it's your gorgeous mistress." Megan is not impressed. "So, a wife is like a Buick in the garage?" "We're trying to make a weakness into a strength. We're selling to men," Don explains. "No, I get it. Doesn't being a mistress make the car immoral?" Megan asks. "The word 'mistress' won't be in the ad," Don says. To Don, this is simply a metaphor, but for Megan, it's a reminder of Don's past, and it stirs her insecurities.


The episode gives us other mistresses, second-place women who are looking to make it in a man's world and are thus making the weakness of femininity into a strength. We're talking about Joan and Peggy and the wildly diverging paths that each takes to a better position and what they're wiling to trade to get there. And though each is able to leverage herself to a new plateau, in the end, one will feel like a trap, while the other, though terrifyingly unknown, will feel like flying.


And in the middle of all of this is Don Draper, whose great victory will be tinged with bitterness and loss.


The episode opens with Don, Stan, Ginsberg, and some freelancers huddled up in the conference room, struggling to come up with a big idea for the Jaguar campaign. They've decorated one wall of the room with various photos and icons, designed to inspire. But it's not working.


Peggy catches Don in hallway, and asks him to approve some copy for Secor Laxatives, but he's in a rotten mood and brushes her off, telling her she's in charge of everything other than Jaguar and to make a decision. It's a great vote of confidence, but in life it's not so much the message, but how it's delivered that counts.


As this exchange is wrapping, Joan shows up with a fancy lunch - lobster - that is wheeled into the conference room courtesy of Roger Sterling. The men applaud as the covers are removed from the trays. Peggy watches this from the other side of the glass wall that separates her from the big time action.


While Don and the creatives tackle the look and feel of the campaign, Pete and Ken work on the politics of the campaign, securing it against some formidable competition. This includes wining and dining guys like Herb Rennet (Gary Basaraba), the president of the Jaguar dealer's association. Herb plays his cards close to the chest, until the end of the meal, when Pete assures him that SCDP will do whatever it takes to make him happy. Seeing his opportunity, Herb tells them that there is one thing that will certainly help them win his vote - a night with Joan Harris. A night in bed with Joan Harris. In a show filled with slimy guys and shady deals, this is a new depth. Luckily, Ken Cosgrove is at the table, but just as he's about to inform Herb that Joan is married, Pete cuts him off.


Herb excuses himself for a moment, and while he's away, Ken asks Pete why he didn't tell Herb the truth about Joan, rather than lead him on. Pete says that Herb himself is married, knows that Joan is married, and doesn't care about either. Ken is disgusted at this. "Well, we wanted to be in the car business," he says, lighting a cigarette.


Don arrives home from work to learn that Megan has a big audition the next day. She's nervous and needing support, but she shifts the attention to Don, asking him what he planned on doing. "I was just going to watch Carson and cry myself to sleep," he says, giving her a hangdog look. She tells him not to worry, that he'll think of something. He says that maybe she'll think of something, inviting her to help. She goes along, and asks for the strategy. That's when he tells her about the Jaguar being like a beautiful, high-maintenance mistress.


These two have been tiptoeing through a minefield these last few episodes, each always on the verge of saying or doing the wrong thing to set off an argument. This time it's Don who gets under Megan's skin, but rather than fight, she simply retreats to the living room, leaving him with Johnny Carson and his drink.


The next morning, Pete shows up early and corners Joan in her office. "I got bad news last night," he tells her. "And I hoped you'd help me deliver it." Like it was her responsibility.


Joan, being the gossip she is, is all ears, and Pete takes his time building up to the ask. "I don't know what to do," he says. "It turns out he wanted something we're not prepared to give. Something very unorthodox." "What does he want?" Joan asks. "We're going to lose Jaguar unless an arrangement is made between you and him," Pete says. Joan is shocked, but Pete piles insult on top of insult. "If you can think of some way to break this to the company, I'd appreciate it."


This launches Joan on the offensive, and she reminds Pete of her marital status and what an asshole he is. He simply throws up his hands, saying it's Herb bringing this up and not him - the don't-shoot-the-messenger defense.


The scene is like a boxing match, and Pete counters Joan's moral outrage by being the amoral pragmatist. He brings up the idea that we all make mistakes in life - mistakes that don't get us anything. They're free. Well, this is a mistake that could help her tremendously. She could get paid from this mistake.


"You're talking prostitution," Joan says. "I'm talking about business at a very high level," Pete counters, sounding like the devil himself.


Pete goes for his knockout punch - the offer of power. "Do you think Cleopatra was a prositute?" he asks. "She was a queen," he continues. "What would it take to make you a queen?" "I don't think you could afford it," Joan says.


Round 1 - Joan Harris.


Next, we find Peggy and Ken in Harry's office. They're about to get on a conference call with Chevalier Blanc, who wants to pull their Beatles-inspired campaign. Harry asks if Peggy will pose as Ginsberg's assistant (Ginsberg can't be pulled away from Jaguar), but Peggy absolutely refuses, making Harry introduce her as Ginsberg's supervisor, which he does.


When they get on the call, Harry and Ken start off talking, but soon the hot potato is tossed in Peggy's lap, and she improvises a compelling new campaign, set in France with a Lady Godiva theme that the buyer from Chevalier Blanc loves.


Score one for Peggy - she maintains her dignity and saves the account in one call.


Pete gathers the partners together to tell them the news about the dinner with Herb Rennet and his demand. At first blush, all the men are shocked by this news and make a show of being outraged, but after Pete does the math for them, their moral outrage elasticizes, allowing for the proper rationalizations to be made that will allow them to sleep at night.


Bert simply gives way. Roger says he'll go along, but he won't pay for it. Lane makes a weak stand, telling Pete he has some nerve. "that's right," Pete says. "We've gone too far to walk away...over what?" It's a chilling remark, but Lane folds. It comes down to Don, who is no stranger to misogyny. He's against the proposal, but for mixed reasons. He's disgusted by the blatant filth and arrogance of the demand, but he also has his pride mixed up in his reasons. He thinks they can win despite Herb, based on the strength of his and his team's ideas. He wants to win the business fair and square or not at all. But Pete won't back down. Don states his position, and leaves to return to his work.


With Don gone, Pete does the math for the remaining partners, reminding them that they don't need Don's blessing to do this. "So, we're 75% of this company. There's no need to create a conspiracy by having a vote, is there?" Like Pontius Pilate, they wash their hands of Pete while giving him their blessing to pursue Joan for the deal. One by one, they slink out of the office.


Back in the writer's room, Don tells the guys to abandon the mistress concept. "It's vulgar. We're going back to racing heritage," he informs them, feeling not only the weight of what he's just witnessed, but the sting of Megan's judgment from before - that this is immoral.


So, just when Don is looking like Mr. Sensitive, in walks Harry, Ken, and Peggy, to tell him of the good news about Chevalier Blanc. It's interesting that so much of the time, Don's miscommunications with Peggy and even Pete come when they approach him right after some stress-inducing incident. Such is the case here.


They tell Don that Peggy has saved the day with a brilliant idea. Peggy plays the humble card, but there's no need. Don doesn't really hear a word they say, until Peggy gets snippy with him. He bursts her bubble by reminding her that it's Ginsberg's account, which causes her to fire back with "I guess I'm not in charge of everything else after all," which is a call-back to his earlier sarcasm. This causes him to explode on her, in front of Harry and Ken. "You want to go to France?" he asks, yelling and pulling a wad of money from his pocket. "Here! Go to France!" he says, throwing the money in her face. It's an unconscionable move, and it sends her out of the office, followed closely by Ken and then Harry.


But ain't that the way life is? One minute, you're the hero, and then you turn around and you're the world's biggest asshole.


And the same goes for Peggy. Ken follows her to her office, where she assures him that she's not crying. When he tells her he didn't think that she was, she gets nasty with him, asking "What? Suddenly, we're all interested in each other's lives?" Megan was right about them. They're SO jaded.


Ken ignores the insult and tries to soften the blow by telling her that Jaguar is slipping away, and that Don is feeling the pinch. Peggy says she doesn't care. Ken, who's turned into one of the only decent men on the show, tells her he'll get her to France, and if he doesn't then they'll leave together. She fixes him with a condescending look. "You and your stupid pact," she says. "Save the fiction for your stories." Ken says nothing. He just turns and leaves her there. Alone.


Lane may have given up in front of the partners, but he decides to pay Joan a visit, to give her an idea. When he brings up the demand, she is offended by the intrusion, misinterpreting his motives. Of course, his motives are as much self-serving as they are altruistic, but he does show her a way to become a queen. He points out that a payoff will not do much for her or her son's future, but if she were to push for a partnership and 5% of the company, then she'd be looking out for their future for a very long time.


There's a moment of great irony in the scene. When Joan still thinks that Lane is in it only for the company, she points out that she makes around $13,000 a year. "I guess you wouldn't even be tempted," she tells him, not realizing, of course, that he's been tempted and seduced by $8,000.


That night, as Don and his team pull a late-night writing session, they are visited by Megan and her friend Julia, the redhead whom Megan was helping audition for Dark Shadows a couple of episodes ago.


As Megan takes Don back to his office, for a little pre-audition hanky-panky to boost her confidence, Julia entertains the writers by climbing on the conference room table and crawling across it on all fours, growling and clawing at the men like a jaguar. I couldn't help but feel that, with her red hair, and the way she was shot from behind, with her butt hanging out of her panties, she was meant to be a stand-in for Joan, that it was a commentary on her role in this ecosystem - the sex kitten.


At home, Pete reads to his daughter before retreating to his hi-fi system, where he listens to classical music under a pair of headphones. Trudy comes to him, once their daughter is in bed, and he starts griping about how he was in a good mood when he left work, but the long trip home exhausts him. He informs her that once the Jaguar account is landed, he'll have to get an apartment in the city, to which she says absolutely not.


"It's an epic poem to get home, and you're dressed for bed at dinner," he complains. She tells him that his love affair with Manhattan has to end. "How can you stand living out in this cemetery?" he asks her. "There's not any good night noises anywhere." She ends the argument by telling him that she wants to raise her children in the fresh air.


It's funny how at work, he can get people to do the most immoral acts, but at home, he wields none of that influence.


Another fruitless domestic argument takes place at the Draper residence when Megan tells Don that she's gotten a call back for Little Murders, the play she needed the confidence for. At first, Don is happy, but when he learns that Megan will be traveling to Boston for out of town tryouts for a few months, he tells her to forget it. This lights the fuse to a big fight that ends with her telling Don that she's doing it anyway and storming off.


The next morning, Joan meets with Pete to discuss the arrangement. She wears a stunning brown dress with a collar done in a print - tiger...or jaguar - that provides a call-back to Megan's friend Julia.


Joan is all business with Pete. She gives him her terms, exactly as Lane advised, and when he starts to protest, she cuts him off. After a beat, he agrees.


As she gets up to leave, she pauses at the door to ask which one he is. "He's not bad," Pete assures her. "He's doing this," she says, then leaves.


Later, Ginsberg interrupts Don in his office to bounce an idea off him. "I know I'm not a manager," Ginsberg says. "But it's hard to get things done with you in another room." "Well, I obviously have the opposite feeling," Don says. "Permission to speak freely," Ginsberg says. "What?" Don is frustrated by him, but it's a funny scene that builds to a breakthrough.


Ginsberg can't quit thinking about the mistress angle, and he drops a line on Don. "Jaguar, at last, something beautiful you can truly own." Don takes a beat, closes his eyes, and sighs a sigh of relief, signifying that at last, the words have been found on which the campaign will be built. Don's relief is palpable.


At about the same time, Peggy is having lunch with Freddie Rumsen, always a welcome sight. She vents to one who knows about the peculiarities of working for Don Draper. "I can never tell, Ballerina, if you're ambitious or if you like to complain," he tells her. She wonders why she can't do both.


During the course of their conversation, Freddie gives her a ton of sound advice, reminding her finally that if Don were sitting where he sits, and he wasn't the subject of the conversation, he'd tell her the same thing - make your move.


This is hard for Peggy to digest, and as she backs away from the idea, he gets her. "You let him know you're not some secretary from Brooklyn who's dying to help out." It's that line that seals the deal because it's so true, at least from Peggy's perspective. He tags the scene by reminding Peggy that she can't get mad if he goes after he job, once it's vacant.


That night, the night before the pitch, Pete pays a visit to Don as he's wrapping up at the office. Pete compliments Don on the tagline. Pete being Pete, he's got a hidden agenda, and we soon see what it is when he tells Don that all impediments have been removed, that it will all boil down to the pitch. What Pete means is that, "Hey Don, I've Don the hard work, now you just go in there and say your magic words."


This doesn't sit well with Don, and as he leaves, he tells Pete that he doesn't want it this way. Pete couldn't be happier.


Don races to Joan's apartment, where her mother answers the door. After a short wait, Joan appears in an emerald green kimono. The mother disappears. "I wanted to tell you that it's not worth it," Don says. "And if we don't get Jaguar, so what? Who wants to be in business with people like that?" Joan seems surprised. "I was told everyone was on board." Don explains that he said no, but that they voted after he left the room. "You're a good one, aren't you?" she says. "So, you understand what I'm saying?" "Yes I do," Joan says. "I'm all right. And thank you."


As Don leaves, Joan sends him off with a tender touch to the cheek. He goes home to prepare, feeling as though he's saved Joan and preserved his chance to win fair and square.


The next day is the pitch, and this is where the show hit another level, putting on par with some of the best episodes in the entire five season run.


Don shows up at the Jaguar showroom, flanked by Roger, Pete, Ken, and the creative team, and as they stride down the middle of the showroom, a competing agency walks past, going in the opposite direction. It's like an old west showdown.


As Don gets into his pitch, he's in old form. But there's a twist.


"You must get tired of hearing what a beautiful thing this car is, but I've met a lot of beautiful women in my life, and despite their protestations, they never tire of hear it," he says. "But when deep beauty is encountered, it arouses deep emotions, because it creates a desire."


At this moment, there's a cut to the night before, as Joan shows up at Herb Rennet's place. It turns out that she did go to him. But why?


Don continues the pitch, and as he does, Joan's night with Herb is intercut, a contrast to the words Don uses, the mistress metaphor.


Finally, as Don closes his pitch, he ends with these words. "Gentlemen, what price would we pay? What behavior would we forgive? If they weren't pretty, if they weren't temperamental, if they weren't beyond our reach, and a little out of our control, would we love them like we do? Jaguar. At last, something truly beautiful you can truly own."


And here, we get the twist. The moment of brilliance. It turns out that Don showed up at Joan's just after she returned from Herb's hotel. It turns out Don was too late.


The pitch was a beautifully constructed scene that reminded me of the end of the Godfather 1, when Michael settles family business as he becomes godfather to his nephew. Don's words, used to sell a car, are perverted by the offer of the man who sits in judgment of him. Don thinks nothing of the metaphor, but Megan was right - the car has become immoral because it was bought with dirty money.


Fade to Don's triumphant return to the office. He's exultant, and as he sees Joan, he asks if she wants to have a drink with the rest of the team. She declines.


At Megan's meeting with the producers and playwright (Jules Pfeiffer), she is asked to turn around in her short dress, so they can look at her. It's a brief moment, but one that is meant, I think, to level the playing field a little. Megan doesn't get off unscathed either.


Next, it's Peggy's turn. She's at a diner, dressed up and waiting. After a moment, Ted Chaough (Kevin Rahm) shows up. He's a nemesis of Don, a hated rival, and he's eager to win Peggy over to his agency - Cutler Gleason and Chaough. Ted praises Peggy to the moon, and asks her what it will take to get her away from Don. Peggy pulls out a SCDP note pad and writes "Copy Chief $18,000/year" on it. Ted takes the pad, crosses out SCDP and $18,000 and writes $19,000 and checks the words "Copy Chief" and pushes the pad back to Peggy. "If this is your last meeting," he offers as his only condition. Peggy starts doing that nervous Peggy thing, where she jerks her head like a bird and says she needs a chocolate shake.


That night, Don returns home, surprised to find Megan there. He learns that she didn't win the role, and tries to console her. She asks about the pitch, and he keeps it low key. She knows better, and says she bets he was great. He says the same about her. "The difference is, I want you to get it," Megan says. Like Betty never would, she calls out his bad behavior, pointing out the reasons why it has to change if their marriage is to work. She reaffirms her love for him, telling him that if it came to acting or him, she's choose him - but she'd hate him for being put in the position to choose. He pulls her to him, telling her that he doesn't want her to fail.


Things seem okay for now.


The next morning, Don shows up for work to learn that Peggy is looking for him. As he calls her to his office, all hell breaks loose, as the word begins to reach SCDP of the agencies who didn't get the Jaguar business. As it becomes clear that Don won the account, Peggy fades into the background.


Roger calls for all the partners to gather in his office, and as they do, Don is shocked to see Joan enter in an emerald green dress - the same color as the emerald in the necklace that was a gift from Herb.


Finally, the official call comes. Roger takes it and thanks Jaguar for making the right choice. As he hangs up the phone, a cheer goes through the room. But Don's not celebrating. After a pause, Pete looks to Joan. "Shall we address the men?" Pete asks.


Don follows the partners to the conference room, where the rest of the company has gathered to celebrate. Peggy is in the hallway. "You wanted to talk to me?" Don asks. "Aren't you busy?" Peggy asks. "I'm not in the mood," Don says, referring to the celebrating. "You really have no idea when things are good, do you?" Again, Peggy catches him at one of those bad moments.


Don gestures that they go to his office, where he asks her to have a drink with him. Peggy goes into her windup. She takes her time, and remains standing as he sits.


"I want you to know that the day you saw something in me, well my whole life changed. And since then, it's been my privilege to not only be at your side, but to be treated like a protégé and for you to be my mentor. And my champion."


Don shifts uncomfortably. "But..." he says.


"But, I think I've reached a point where it's time for me to have a new experience." "Really?" Don says, not taking her seriously. "I'm giving my notice. I've accepted another offer."


Don tries to buy her back with an extravagant raise, but she's made up her mind. Unlike Joan, she won't be bought. And once Don gets it, the look on his face is devastating - the realization that she's really leaving. He asks where she's going, and when she tells him, his reaction is visceral. He tells her to forget about the notice, that she can leave immediately. It's a painful goodbye, and when she offers her hand, rather than shake it, he gives it a long kiss, causing her to tear up. "Don't be a stranger," she says, choking back tears.


She leaves him there, and returns to her office, where she gets her coat, her purse, a thermos, and a mug. The rest she leaves behind. As she leaves SCDP one final time, she passes the celebration that carries on in the conference room, and as she disappears to the lobby, Joan catches a glimpse of her. The look on Joan's face provided the final contrast between these two women. As Peggy leaves on her own terms, a free woman, Joan is left behind, trapped by the bargain she's made. Yes, Joan made partner, but is she truly free?


The episode ends as Peggy takes a final look back. It's a heartbreaking moment. But as the elevator pings and the door opens, Peggy smiles as she steps into the future.
